The Camping Gear for all the Campers on my Shopping List

by Liz Childers

I’ve never found a reason for it, but time seems to move faster in the fall. Just like with every year, I am having trouble admitting to myself that the New Year is almost here. Of course, I’m also dealing with the fact that Christmas is less than two weeks away! I spent a good part of my weekend online browsing, and came up with some great ideas for the camping fans or lovers of camping gear who are on my list. In case you’ve put off shopping, too, or are still looking to pick up a few stocking stuffers, I want to share the list of camping gear I plan to pick up.

Utensils

Camping utensils seemed like the perfect stocking stuffer for everyone in my family. We’ve all had those trips where utensils, for whatever reason, can’t be properly cleaned. That’s why I like to replace them occasionally. I love compact camping utensil sets, and both Ka-bar and Bear & Sons make versions. Since the companies are knife manufacturers, you can trust that the utensils will be sturdy enough to cut through any camp food and will hold up well.

Hand warmers
Because I live in the South, camping is still feasible during this time of the year. If you’re braver than I am in the face of snow or frosty winds, then you may be able to camp further north as well! Even down here, the temperatures can be very cold at night. That’s why hand warmers seemed like an excellent stocking stuffer. Finding a way to stay warm at night in the woods is so essential, so these hand warmers could make or break a great trip.

Headlamp

When I was six and first started going to camp, I was incredibly envious of all the older girls who came with headlamps. Because my camp had mandatory cabin campouts once a week, these girls were seasoned campers from their past summers – and they knew the benefits of a headlamp. I remember begging for a headlamp, as soon as I got home at the end of that summer. I have a few friends that have just started camping, so I think a headlamp is the perfect gift for them.

Dutch Oven

A Dutch oven is on my personal wish list. (Santa, if you’re still looking for stuff for me…hint, hint). Cooking camp food in a Dutch oven is so easy, so I really want an indoor one. If you think the camp chef of your family may feel the same way, look for the Dutch ovens without legs – that’s the way to tell if it’s an indoor version.

Have you bought any camping gear for gifts this holiday season? Or is there any camping gear you really want to find under the Christmas tree or open during Hanukah?
