Camground Rates: How Much Is Too Much?
This year, many campgrounds are closing due to the economy, and many others are raising their rates in order to stay in business. When does the cost of spending a night at a campground make you start looking elsewhere to go camping or RVing for a cheaper price?

Camping Tips
Camping blogs are good resources for finding outdoor information. The camping blogs section (new) is where campers can describe their blog sites. They are also asked to list any advice, suggestions or tips that they have for campers?

Dan of Camping Advice Blog had these tips to share:

  • Always be prepared for worse weather than you expect.
  • Bring a flashlight, even if you are going out for a day hike. You never know what could happen and having a light at night is very useful.
  • Build yourself a small first aid kit and keep it in your backpack at all times. You can read more about this on my blog.
  • Maps and compasses may seem out of date with all the digital devices coming out these days, but they are still very practical and can "save the day" when your device runs out of battery, takes water damage, or breaks.

Mather Campground, South Rim Grand Canyon
Mather Campground, South Rim of the Grand Canyon"This photo was taken on Feb. 28, 2010 in the Mather Campground at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Snowfall this year has been heavy with about 4 feet on the ground where shaded and only one loop of the campground was barely kept open. The campground loop had two heated restrooms with running water. It was an easy walk to the general store, which is open all year. There were several hardy tent campers present, but sites were cleared to accommodate about 20 feet maximum." ~ Paul

What Style Sleeping Bag Do You Use?

mummy sleeping bag ~ DavidSleeping bags come in two styles: mummy and rectangular. Mummy sleeping bags usually cost a little more and weigh a little less than rectagular sleeping bags. The mummy bag fits close to your body, whereas the rectangular bag gives you some extra leg and elbow room.

rectangular sleeping bag ~ DavidWhen backpacking, I use a compact lightweight mummy sleeping bag, but when tent camping, I like the roominess of my oversize (and bulky) rectangular sleeping bag.

Get Ready for Camping Season
Spring Cleaning - Are you getting cabin fever? Don't worry, spring is just around the corner. Time to shake the cobwebs off your camping gear, air it out, and get it ready for another camping season. If you haven't done so already, before packing up for that first outdoor trip of the year, it's a good idea to check your gear for wear and tear, mold or mildew, dirt and grime, or signs of damage that may require some repairs.

With a little care and maintenance, most camping gear will last you a lifetime. Just because a piece of gear may be damaged doesn't mean that it has to be replaced.
