Avoiding TicksIn grassy eastern woodlands deer ticks may be a hazard because they carry Lyme disease. To avoid being bitten by ticks, which are usually no bigger than the head of a pin, make sure your lower extremities are covered adequately. Frequent inspections of your lower extremities by a member of your camping party can stave off tick bites. Also make sure to apply insect repellent on your lower body. Signs of Lyme disease include a reddish spot on the skin that has a pale center. Muscular pain, headaches, and fever are other symptoms to watch for. If these symptoms crop up after you've been in the woods, consult a doctor and advise him or her of your camping activities. Remember, insect repellents are almost always necessary when camping in the woods. Always follow the directions on the label, and avoid applying DEET-based insect repellents around your nose or mouth. |
